Concept Notes
The global rise in life expectancy is significantly reshaping the demographics of the Global South, particularly India, where by 2050, the elderly population is projected to constitute 19.5 per cent of its total population. The demographic transition has brought challenges and opportunities, as urbanisation, migration, and shifting social dynamics lead to family dispersal and the gradual weakening of traditional caregiving structures. This erosion of kinship networks has left many elderly individuals without essential support. As families become increasingly dispersed, sustaining consistent care becomes challenging, creating a “care deficit” that impacts the older population’s well-being and quality of life. Compounding this issue, the “feminisation of ageing” means that more women outlive men, necessitating gender sensitive policies that address distinct social needs. While policies like the National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP), Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY), and the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) provide financial support, and the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) focuses on healthcare, their reach remains limited. This situation challenges the state and community to develop social structures empowering older adults to live with dignity.
Amid these challenges, a growing number of elderly individuals are living life with full zest, actively participating in social and economic activities. Yet, integrating this vitality into the mainstream requires concerted efforts to promote active ageing—ongoing engagement in social, financial, and cultural activities essential for well-being. The upcoming conference, Ageing with Dignity: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations in Policy and Practices, will bring together experts to explore solutions that foster intergenerational solidarity, enhancing India’s framework for a dignified, inclusive, and active ageing experience.
