Concept Note

Very few texts in the history of English Literature have evoked more admiration and controversy than Ulysses and The Waste Land when they were first published in 1922. When the dust raised by the furore settled, the impact of these works on literature was tremendous – all changed, changed utterly. Together James Joyce and T S Eliot ushered in a modernist revolution that radically transformed the sensibilities of contemporary readers and writers. Beyond linguistic and continental frontiers, these texts influenced the writing of fiction and poetry across the world. They remained inevitable components of literary education till the advent of the theory revolution in the 1970s. Now, a century after their publication, the time has come to interrogate their status in a radically different socio-political and historical scenario. How relevant are these texts today? Have they become ‘classics’ of a bygone avant- garde era? Do they still address some of the central issues in relation to form and content? – These are some of the key issues this conference seeks to explore.
