ELIGIBILITY: Doctorate / Post-graduate / Graduate Degree – whether completed or ongoing – in Philosophy / Jaina Darśana / Religious Studies / Sanskrit / Prakrit / Ancient Indian istory & Culture. Having Certificate or Diploma in the above-mentioned subjects (if any) will also be taken into consideration.

DESIRABLE: The applicants with knowledge of Jain studies, Indian philosophy and Sanskrit may be given preference. Participants must be able to read and write Devnagari script.

Objectives of the Workshop

The twelve-day workshop on the 8th-century Sanskrit text ‘Ṣaḍ-Darśana Samuccaya’ of Jaina Ācārya Haribhadra Sūri will take an integrated approach to the study of ancient Indian philosophies and religious traditions by achieving the following objectives: (1) making efficient philosophers; (2) foster self-discovery,
self-awareness, and self-discipline; (3) develop awareness of and appreciation for cultural and conceptual diversity; (4) stimulate intellectual curiosity and growth; (5) rovide fundamental career concepts and skills; (6) help to develop sensitivity to the needs and values of others and a respect for individual and group differences; (7) help everyone for excellence and install a desire to reach the limit of his or her potential; and (8) encourage to become lifelong learners

THEME:

Attendees will engage in conversations about the following topics: (1) Introduction of Six Philosophies; (2) Concept of Bauddha Philosophy; (3) Theory of Nyāya Philosophy; (4) Doctrines of Sāṅkhya Philosophy; (5) An Overview of Jaina Philosophy; (6) An Outline of Vaiśeṣika Philosophy; (7) An Overview of Mīmānsā
Philosophy; (8) Justification on The Number of Philosophies; (9) Significance of Lokāyata Philosophy; and (10) Historical Development of the Schools. The ultimate goal of the workshop will be to learn about Indian philosophies and their traditions with empathy while avoiding assumptions or judgements about religious truth claims

CAPACITY OF WORKSHOP:

Seats in the course are limited and admission will be given according to merit. Preference will be given to the Teaching faculty / Research scholars / Acharya or MA / Shastri or BA students. However, the candidates who have acquired or appear at the Master’s level are also strongly recommended to apply. There is no provision for the support of any family member brought by the participant.

  • BASIS FOR SELECTION: Academic qualification and knowledge of the subject. It is mandatory to attend the workshop for two weeks.
  • SCHEDULE OF LECTURES: Two sessions of three hours each from 9:30 to 12:30 & 2:00 to 5:00 PM. MEANWHILE, Library facilities and interaction with the experts, teachers & scholars will also be available.
  • PERIODICAL TESTS: The teachers concerned may conduct topic-wise tests – in form of written or oral – at regular interval. Final examination, including viva-voce, will be held at the completion of the course.

FACILITIES OFFERED: All outstation participants will be provided free boarding, lodging and local hospitality within the campus. These facilities will be available to participants from the evening of July 31 to the morning of Aug 13, 2023. Travel allowance will also be provided. The actual cost of travel (to & fro) would be reimbursed up to III A.C. class Railway fare by the shortest route on production of confirmed tickets only.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Jain Vishva Bharati Institute has been a pioneer centre of Jain studies and research. Right from the time of its establishment in 1991, this institute has devoted itself completely for the promotion and propagation of Jain philosophy and culture. Under the spiritual guidance of Gaṇādhipati Gurudeva Shree Acharya Tulsi, Acharya Mahapragya and Acharya Mahashraman, Jain Vishva Bharati Institute has accepted not only the basic tenets of Jainism but also other oriental disciplines for the welfare of humanity. About the Department

The Department of Jainology and Comparative Religion & Philosophy is trying its best to actualise the vision and mission of its reverend Anushasta. It has accomplished its goal by connecting students and scholars interested in Jain studies from all over the world. It is also developing Jain studies in collaboration of Western Universities like Florida International University, USA; Ghent University, Belgium, etc. Recently, with the blessings of Acharya Mahashraman, the Present Spiritual Mentor of JVBI, the department is focusing on scientific research and innovative social studies in Jainism. The whole exercise is to impart and create a new knowledge for peaceful, progressive, harmonious world-order and sustainable development.
