Concept Note

The global system is in a state of flux as it is undergoing unprecedented transformation in the post-pandemic period. Inter-state relations in the 21 century are taking new turns and most nations are redefining their strategic priorities and relationships to position themselves in the emerging global
system. The relative peace of the post-Cold War order is fast altering with new conflicts and tensions erupting in various parts of the globe. Great powers are attempting to reassert their status in the global economic and security landscape through military interventions and the creation of new spheres of
influence. The Ukraine crisis and the mounting tensions in the Taiwan Straits have the potential to escalate into a dangerous large-scale war involving great powers. These wars could involve the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). As a rising power, India is on its way to becoming an economic powerhouse and is currently trying to obtain its legitimate place in the international system. As the soon to be most populated state and the largest democracy in the world, India’s policies and actions are crucial in re- shaping the global system in the twenty first century. The increasing power aspirations of China and its more assertive postures in Asia have thrown open many challenges to India’s foreign policy. The unresolved border dispute and the wrangles over maritime domains are major concerns for India. Increasing great power competition and the growing non- traditional security challenges are also
major challenges for India. The proposed conference will bring together scholars, policy makers, analysts, diplomats, and journalists from India and abroad to discuss the multi-dimensional challenges confronting India in the twenty–first century. The conference will pay special focus on India’s policy of strategic
autonomy and multi alignment to engage with great powers and regions in the emerging global architecture. In particular, we seek to explore the challenges and opportunities for India in engaging the rising China and the United States in the Indo- Pacific region and beyond.
