Beyond Translation: Transcending the Frontiers of (Re)Writing

The Department of English, University of Calicut, warmly invites you to the Three- Day International Seminar on “Beyond Translation: Transcending the Frontiers of (Re)Writing” to be conducted on 23, 24 &
25 January 2023 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) in collaboration with the National Translation Mission
(NTM), Mysore, to honour Dr. K.M. Sherrif, who is retiring from service in March 2023. Keeping in line with the idea of “translation as rewriting”, this seminar seeks to forge beyond the conventional confines which Translation Studies have long been burdened with, at least in the Indian Context, and attempts to engage with themes that challenge the established concepts and foster multi- and-interdisciplinary perspectives

Dr. K.M. Sherrif

Dr.K.M. Sherrif is an academician and a practising translator who translates between Malayalam, English, Hindi, Gujarati, and Tamil. Among his better- known works are, Ekalavyas with Thumbs (1999), the
first translation of Gujarati Dalit writing into English, and ” Kunhupaathumma’s Tryst with Destiny”, the first study of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s fiction in English. Therefore, in line with the work and research with which Dr. Sherrif has been engaged over the years, this seminar aims to continue and take forward the discipline of Translation Studies into less explored avenues.
