Target Audience: This seminar is open to academicians, researchers, students, policymakers, practitioners, and representatives of NGOs working in the fields of rural development, tourism, and indigenous studies
The relationship between tourism and indigenous communities has often been complex, with indigenous cultures either being commodified or marginalized. However, recent trends in sustainable tourism have emphasized the importance of integrating Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) to promote authentic, respectful, and community-driven tourism models. This seminar aims to explore the role of IKS in enhancing sustainable tourism and its potential to boost livelihoods and drive rural development in indigenous communities. Indigenous Knowledge Systems encompass the skills, wisdom, and cultural practices developed by indigenous communities over centuries. These systems are inherently sustainable, deeply connected to the environment, and provide valuable insights for contemporary sustainable development challenges. Integrating IKS into tourism can lead to unique, authentic experiences for visitors while simultaneously empowering indigenous communities and preserving their cultural heritage.
Tourism, when managed responsibly, can serve as a tool for economic development, especially in rural areas. However, the conventional tourism model often overlooks the contributions and participation of indigenous communities. By integrating IKS into tourism, we can create a more inclusive model that respects and benefits these communities, contributing to both their economic well-being and the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage.
