The session will be chaired by Mr. Abdul Matin, one of the most seasoned academics and a faculty member of the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University.

About our Speakers:

Professor Jaffrelot is a French Political scientist and a professor of South Asian studies in Sciences Po, Paris, and Kings College, London. Known for his extensive work and expertise in area studies of India and Pakistan, Professor Jaffrelot has penned many books to culminate his research to the world.

His publications on India cover aspects of Indian nationalism and democracy, Hindu nationalism, caste mobilisation in politics and ethnic conflicts. Most notable is his recent book Modi’s India: Hindu Nationalism and the rise of Ethnic Democracy.

Similarly, on Pakistan, his scholarship has focused on Pakistani nationalism, Islamic fundamentalism, Taliban and Kashmir militancy, politics, coups and its history as a rentier state in the context of global geopolitics. His interest in India was kindled when he was still in school, through a philosophy teacher well-versed in Indian philosophy.

He is the senior editor of the Sciences Po book series, Comparative Politics and International Relations published by C. Hurst & Co. He has been the editor-in-chief of Critique Internationale and serves on the editorial boards of Nations and Nationalism and International Political Sociology. He is also on the editorial board of The Online Encyclopaedia of Mass Violence.

He often writes columns for the Indian Express and The Caravan, and received the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism. He was awarded the Brienne Prize for geopolitics by the Defense Ministry of France for his book Le Syndrome Pakistanais.

About Our Chair:

Abdul Matin is Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University. He has done his M.A in Political Science from the University of Hyderabad, M.Phil from the Center for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Advanced PhD scholar at the same center at JNU.Mr. Matin has been the DAAD Fellow at the University of Goettingen, Germany. His research interest broadly includes Democracy and Inequality in Modern India, Political Sociology, caste, social justice and Minority politics in contemporary West Bengal.

Abdul Matin presented his research papers and delivered lectures at various universities including George August University Gottingen, Martin Luther University Halle, Hamburg University, Free University, Berlin, Humboldt University, Germany , University of Copenhagen, Denmark, Lund University, Sweden, Zurich University, Switzerland, University of Turino, Italy, Sciences Po, Paris France, CEAAS, France, University of Cordova, Spain, Charles University, Prague, Colombo, Srilanka , Dhaka , BRAC , SylhetandRajshahi University Bangladesh, Belgium, Istanbul, etc. He has published research articles and book chapters with Sage Publications, Routledge, MacMillan Palgrave- Springer, Mittal and Rawat etc.
