About the Workshop
Taaoos Chaman is a multi-dimensional Samanvay project which is dedicated to preserving oral-literary traditions of India and promoting poetry recitation as an art form. In order to do so, we host an online poetry reading and recitation workshop each month. The workshop gives equal attention to a close reading of the poetic text as a skill and to poetry recitation as a performing art.
The workshop is led by Salim Arif, an eminent theatre personality from India, and Dr. Fauzia Farooqui, a literature scholar and faculty at Princeton University. Based on the selected poet or genre, we often invite experts and special guest teachers to contribute to the workshop too.
Each month, we select a poet to read and discuss the literary and performing aspects of some of his/her poems during the workshop. The last part of the workshop is devoted to practicing and performing poetry recitation. Preselected poems are shared with registered participants in advance. The workshop is free and open to the public but registration is required.
