About the Project: The project, “Towards a National Cultural Landscape Information System: Mapping Heritage Sites for Inclusive Planning,” aims to create a National Database of Cultural Heritage Landscapes for India, marking the first step in scaling efforts across NIAS and partnering institutions. By focusing on 100 key archaeological sites, this project emphasizes geospatial mapping of both protected and unprotected heritage remnants. The resulting database will empower researchers, archaeologists, and planners to make balanced decisions that integrate heritage preservation with sustainable urban development, ensuring India’s cultural legacy is safeguarded for future generations.

Position Title: (based on qualifications and experience) Post-doctoral Associate I (fresh PhD)/ II (PhD with 2 years research experience)/ III (PhD with 4 years research experience)

Job Description: The selected candidate will work with the Principal Investigator to achieve project deliverables and will be based at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. Key responsibilities include:

  • Research on cultural heritage sites
  • Geospatial analysis and field surveys (field experience is a plus)
  • Collaborative teamwork

Qualifications: The candidate should hold a Ph.D. degree (or have at least submitted their thesis) from a recognized university or institution in a related discipline, such as geoarchaeology, archaeology, history, heritage management, conservation, architecture, urban planning, art history, maritime/marine archaeology, computer vision, remote sensing, or GIS. The candidate should demonstrate a strong conceptual foundation in their field, excellent analytical and writing skills, and relevant fieldwork experience.

Additionally, the following skill sets are desirable: remote sensing image analysis and ground truthing, GPS survey and navigation, and geospatial analysis.
