Why a Public Writing Workshop?

Academics trained in disciplinary language and used to writing for scholarly journals and books often find it difficult to write for non-academic publics.

The barriers to public engagement include:

  • How to write in accessible language without writing simplistically.
  • How to frame and contextualize such that the academic insights are intelligible to non-academic publics.
  • Understanding the specific nature of the publics one is writing for.

This workshop is aimed at thinking about these questions collectively and to foster a new set of public writers. Through the workshop we intend to nurture new writers and guide them into developing a public piece of writing from their academic research interests. The Khidki Collective will assist in publishing this piece in a popular publication.

Who is the workshop for?

  • Academics researching on South India
  • MA and PhD students keen on learning public writing.
  • Preference will be given to applicants from public universities
  • Preference will also be given to those who already have an academic piece of writing that they want to convert into a public piece.

Resource persons at the workshop

We have invited senior journalists, editors, and academics who regularly work with non-academic publics to share their experience and insights with us.

The Khidki Collective has been engaging with the Deccan region through all its public work. In this edition, we intend to curate and foster public writing on histories, personalities, literatures, cultures and publics from regions in South India.
