Prof. Krishnaswami Alladi is a mathematician of international reputation. He hails from Chennai and did his schooling at Vidya Mandir where he was awarded a Gold Medal as the best outgoing student when completing his Matriculation in 1971. He then did his PUC and BSc Mathematics in Vivekananda College, Chennai. While in the BSc, he started doing research in number theory on his own. His undergraduate research attracted the attention of Prof. Paul Erdos, one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th Century, and with his recommendation, Alladi went to the University of California in Los Angeles in 1975 on a Chancellor’s Fellowship to do his PhD right after his BSc; he completed his doctorate in 1978 at the young age of 22,  and was awarded the Alumni Medal at UCLA for the best thesis (all subjects) in 1978.

After his PhD, he held the prestigious Hildebrandt Research Assistant Professorship at the University of Michigan (1978-81), and a Visiting Membership at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1981-82), one of the greatest academic centers, where Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer were on its permanent faculty. He is currently a Professor at the University of Florida, where he joined its faculty in 1986. Prof. Alladi’s research spans several areas of number theory – analytic number theory, probabilistic number theory, sieve methods, Diophantine approximations, and the theory of partitions and q-hypergeometric series. In addition to conducting fundamental research, Prof. Alladi believes in serving the profession. He thus served as Mathematics Chairman at the University of Florida for a decade (1998-2008), and elevated the performance and reputation of that department by introducing several new programmes. In 1997 he launched The Ramanujan Journal, an international research journal, devoted to all areas influenced by Ramanujan, and has served as the Editor-in-Chief since the inception of the journal. It was at his suggestion that the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize was launched in 2005 – a prize for very young mathematicians for path-breaking work in areas influenced by Ramanujan. He has served as Chair of the Prize Committee since the inception of the Prize and has worked tirelessly to promote the prize and make it one of the most prestigious awards in the mathematical world.

For his fundamental research and his distinguished contributions to the profession, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013 during the inaugural year of the Fellows Program, and in 2022 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by SASTRA University. – Profile of the Speaker: Click here
