Year 1963: Peacock is Declared the National Bird of India

On This Day (January 31st)

The peacock was declared the National Bird of India because of its rich religious and legendary involvement in Indian traditions. There are quite a few reasons why the peacock was chosen.

The bird is well-distributed within the country so it is truly ‘national’. It is recognisable to the common man. It lends itself to formal depiction, i.e. abstract depiction on government publications etc. It has not been used as the bird emblem of any other nation. It is associated with Indian myths and legends. Hence, the peacock fit the bill.
