CONCEPT NOTE:

Competence has long been understood to be the key factor in assessing the calibre of the services rendered by professions across disciplines. Being competent enables us to accurately appraise, apply theoretical concepts and assess and intervene. It accomplishes the task and is measurable. But social workers are more than just employees. We are change agents, educators, connectors, and motivators. The personal competencies of listening, perceptiveness and analysis help the professional competency of conducting a psycho-social examination.

Effective social work practice requires a personal ability called critical thinking. Competence in social work is the capacity to integrate and apply social work knowledge, beliefs and abilities to real world circumstances in a deliberate, intentional, and professional way to advance individual and communal well-being. The professional social work curriculum in India acknowledges a holistic view of competence, which means that the demonstration of competence is informed by knowledge, values, skills, and cognitive and affective processes, including the social worker’s critical thinking, affective reactions and exercise of judgment in relation to particular practice situations. Multi-dimensional and made up of connected skills, overall professional competence has many dimensions. Competence in a social worker is viewed as dynamic and developing through time in connection to ongoing learning. The approach to curriculum design known as Competency- based education focuses on the desired results. To ensure that students can demonstrate the integration and application of the competences in practice, the outcomes approach’s main objective is to make sure that this is possible. Programs create the substantive content, pedagogical style and educational activities that give students the chance to learn about and display the required capabilities using a curriculum design that starts with the outcomes, articulated as the expected competencies. Historical perspectives and relevance are discussed in the core competency framework introduction.
