The difference between gender and sexuality is intricate and slippery, heavily patrolled by dominant institutions of society. While gender identity and gender expression may or may not conform to one another, both define the personal self. Meanwhile, the definition of sex as biological and dictated by
one’s anatomy, hormones, and chromosomes is still under debate. Gender and sexuality are increasingly acknowledged as a spectrum of fluid identifications, positions, orientations, behaviours, and desires. In reinforcing a particular sexual or gender binary, institutional forces also guard the transactions of narratives that render such categories as natural, normal or biologically driven. In fact, the discursive reorientation of ‘other/ed’ bodies and identities to a cultural masculine ideal presupposes a devious seamlessness of the sexual and the cultural. Their discursivity raises crucial questions of representation as well, for the representational form both permits and limits how they unfold in the text.
In the current era, global changes affecting gender and sexualities are complex and wide-ranging, generating a sense of crisis and the need for urgent engagement. This conference attempts to take up
for discussion the many interactions, encounters and negotiations underway, even as sexual communities and gendered individuals redefine public spaces into queer sites of contested narratives.
