True understanding of the meaning of democracy by everybody, while a necessity, has become increasingly complex, as there is a growing tendency towards authoritarianism in all walks of life especially among politicians, institutions and countries. Even as stakeholders speak and ‘practice’ democracy, they use democratic means to derail democracy. Everyday reports of politics, institutions, industry and workforce point towards a trend that masks authoritarianism with ‘democratic’ points. What appears like democracy may be authoritarianism in different colours. This creates discontent among truly democratic spirited individuals and communities. Masked authoritarianism is often difficult to recognise in the first instance.

In this regard, a new debate on the basic structure of the constitution has begun. It is exigent to protect and defend the constitution in the true spirit to ensure the continuation of democracy in India. The judiciary and media can play a great role in saving and strengthening Indian democracy and preventing it from slipping into authoritarianism. The judiciary and media face many challenges in this scenario. The proposed seminar will delve into the current references and implications of these issues.
