World Rare Diseases Day is an annual observance that aims to raise awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. It is held on the last day of February every year. The day was first established in 2008 by the European Organization for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) and its Council of National Alliances as a way to bring together patients, families, healthcare professionals, and researchers to help improve the lives of those living with rare diseases. A rare disease is defined as a condition that affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. There are over 7,000 rare diseases, and many of these are genetic and have no cure. World Rare Diseases Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness about rare diseases, advocate for policy changes to improve access to diagnosis, treatment, and care, and encourage investment in research to find cures and better therapies for rare diseases.
