Applications are Invited for Bhagwan Mahavir Prakrit Fellowship

Applications are invited (from interested persons working/studying in the field of Indology across the globe) for the fifth batch of fully aided (lodging, food, and fellowship) nine-month residential program Bhagwan Mahavir Prakrit Fellowship (BMPF-5) by the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS), Pune. This Annual program is being organised by ISJS with the financial support of Mahavira Vision Inc (MVI) and Jain Academic Foundation of North America (JAFNA), USA, since 2020.

The main objective of the program is to promote and build a global cadre of serious Jain scholars well versed in Prakrit-the Jain Agamic language.

  • Last date of application is June 30, 2024
  • VENUE: The Prakrit program will be held in Pune, India.
  • Total No. of Seats: 10 (Ten)
  • DURATION: Nine (09) months, starting from September 1, 2024.
  • ELIGIBILITY: Doctorate / Post-graduate / Graduate in Philosophy / History / Indology / Languages / Linguistics / Religious Studies, across the globe, are eligible for this course.
  • DESIRABLE: The applicants with knowledge of Jain studies, Hindi, Sanskrit and Prakrit may be given preference. Ability to read and write Devanagari script is desirable.

Certification: After completion of the program participants will be awarded by a PG Diploma certificate from a reputed university in India

Medium of Instruction: English with the help of Roman transliteration & English equivalent of Sanskrit and Hindi terms

OBJECTIVE

To prepare serious scholars of Prakrit and Jain Studies to work in India and abroad to impart sound knowledge of Prakrit language, Prakrit literature, especially Prakrit scriptures and Prakrit manuscripts. The specific aim is to teach Prakrit language and literature and carry out research in the area of Prakrit & Jain studies, in higher institutions all over the world, through the scholars prepared by this program.

PREAMBLE

For deep and proper understanding and appreciation of any tradition, study and research based on its original sources is essential. The stalwarts like Hermann Jacobi, A.N. Upadhye, Padmanabh S. Jaini have showed us the way.

Application Process

The scholars, interested to join this 5th Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship, are invited to send their applications to admission@isjs.in

The following documents are required with the application:

  • Two recommendation letters (to be sent directly to admission@isjs.in and cchapple@lmu.edu) by the recommending faculty members.
  • Academic Qualifications and relevant experiences.
  • Background in Jainism, Buddhism and in Hindi, Sanskrit, Prakrit
  • Statement of Purpose including your future research plans.

OUTLINE OF THE TEACHING CONTENT

  • Introductory lectures (basics of Prakrit language)
  • Prakrit grammar based on Siddha-hema-shabdanushasan by Acharya Hemachadra (8th Chapter)
  • Translation and grammatical analysis of selected texts of different dialects of Prakrit
  • Practice of spoken Prakrit and passage writing
  • Study of Manuscripts, Epigraphs, convert them to Devanagari and Translate them into English
