Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. programme of MIDS from candidates who have been awarded fellowships from UGC or any other funding agency for a minimum period of 3 years to carry out doctoral research in Social Science (Economics / Sociology / History / Anthropology / Development Studies / Social Work).

Candidates without fellowship but wishing to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship may also apply for admission in the Institute. Final selection for the ICSSR fellowship solely rests with ICSSR..

Candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds/ groups are encouraged to apply.

Selection of candidates will be based on the quality of research proposal, evaluation of the written test and interview, and the availability of supervisor for the chosen area of research.

MIDS Doctoral Programme

The Ph.D. programme has been an integral part of the academic activities of the Institute. The Institute has a full-time Ph.D. programme for students as well as teaching scholars. Given the academic focus, freedom, and flexibility for working in broad areas of development and social sciences, the Institute has won recognition for maintaining quality, rigour, and originality in scholarly works published in various forms.

Those who wish to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship may also apply for admission to the Institute. Application for the ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship can be made only after the candidate’s (a) admission in MIDS, (b) admission and confirmed registration in the University of Madras and (c) Doctoral Committee is approved by the university. Eligibility Criteria for Applications

Candidates who have completed Post-Graduation with at least 55% marks (50% marks, in the case of SC/ST candidates) or equivalent grade point average in Economics, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Development Studies, or Social Work are eligible to apply.

Areas of research (of available supervisors) include the following:

  • Sociology, anthropology, development studies, social movements
  • Environmental economics; Development economics.Employed applicants must submit written consent from their employer at the time of joining the programme.
  • Political economy of environment
  • Social, cultural, and intellectual history; social change in modern India; political movements in modern India; new social movements in modern India
  • Agricultural and rural studies; urban/semi-urban agriculture; food, energy, & water-related studies; global warming and sustainable development; business, marketing, and trade
  • Education & development; Migration; Local planning; Informality
  • Comparative Sub-National Political Economy and Inequality

Employed applicants must submit written consent from their employer at the time of joining the programme.

Candidates should have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or obtained an M.Phil.

Age: Candidates should not be more than 35 years of age (relaxation in age by 5 years permissible for SC/ST candidates) as on 22.01.2022.

University Affiliation

MIDS is a recognised research institute affiliated to the University of Madras. The candidates admitted in MIDS should follow the Ph.D. guidelines set by the University of Madras. Students admitted to the MIDS Ph.D. programme should complete the coursework and mandatory credit requirements for their registration with the University of Madras. Candidates’ continuation in the programme shall be subject to completing the coursework and passing the coursework assessments. If the candidate fails to clear the coursework or register successfully with the University of Madras, the provisional admission of the candidate at the Institute will be cancelled.

PhD Regulations and Guidelines

The selected candidates must follow all the rules and regulations of the Institute, applicable fellowship, and the PhD regulations issued by the University of Madras and University Grants Commission. Along with these regulations, MIDS also follows specific rules to strengthen the Ph.D. programme in the Institute. While offering Ph.D. admission, the Institute may collect a signed undertaking from the student to abide by the rules and regulations set for the MIDS doctoral research programme.

Information on Fellowship

Given the limited financial support available, the Institute encourages candidates who have been awarded fellowships from the UGC or any other funding agencies for a minimum period of three years to apply to the programme. In the absence of any such fellowships, candidates have to support themselves or may explore scholarships available from various funding agencies and follow the guidelines and requirements set by them.

Those who wish to apply for ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship may kindly note that application for the ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowship can be made only after the candidate’s (a) admission in MIDS, (b) admission and confirmed registration in the University of Madras and (c) Doctoral Committee is approved by the University. Fellowships will be granted by ICSSR as per conditions announced by ICSSR from time to time. Such decisions solely rest with ICSSR and that may include rejection as well. Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be called for a written test and an interview.

The final selection from the shortlisted candidates will be strictly based on the quality of the research proposal, evaluation of the candidate’s performance in the written test, interview, and the availability of Supervisors in her/his area of specialisation.
