About the Fellowship
Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi-110011 offers 18 scholarships (UR-6/SC-3/ST-1/OBC-5/EWS-2/PwD-1) to Indian Nationals and 2 scholarships to Nationals of other Asian countries for Ph.D. studies in India from 1 April 2024 for up to 2 years.
- The subjects covered are: Indian History & Civilization, Sociology, Comparative Studies in Religion & Culture, Economics and Ecology & Environment
- Duly filled in forms should reach the JNMF office latest by 31 August 2023
- DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP: Up to 2 years.
CATEGORIES OF SCHOLARSHIPS:
The scholarships are available for Ph.D. study in India to the following two categories of students:
- Indian Nationals
- Nationals of other Asian countries
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION/SUBJECT:
A candidate may apply for scholarship in any one of the following areas of specialization:
- Indian History and Civilization
- Sociology
- Economics
- Comparative Studies in Religion and Culture
- Ecology and Environment
ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS:
At the time of submission of the application for scholarship, a candidate should:
- Hold a FIRST Class Post-graduate degree with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in both graduate and post graduate levels.
- Already be registered/admitted for Ph.D. degree with a recognized University/Institution in India. Those who have applied for registration and have not yet been registered at the time of submission of application are not eligible to apply
- Be a full-time Ph.D. Scholar.
Age Limit and Relaxation: Candidates should not be above 35 years of age on 1st October of the year of selection. A relaxation of up to 5 years will be provided to the candidates belonging to OBC-NCL (as per the Central List of OBC available on website: www.ncbc.nic.in) /SC/ST/PwD/Third gender categories and to women applicants. A relaxation of up to 5 years will be provided to the candidates who have served in the armed forces subject to the length of service in armed forces up to 1st October of the year of selection. Total age relaxation on the above ground(s) shall not exceed five years under any circumstances.
RESERVATION:
The reservation of scholarships shall be as follows:
- 15% of the scholarships for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
- 7.5% of the seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
- 27% of the seats for Other Backwards Classes (OBC) Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) candidates as per the Central List.
- 10% of the seats for General Economically Weaker Sections (General-EWS)
- 5% of the seats in the above-mentioned categories for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) with 40% or more disability.
VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR BOTH THE CATEGORIES
- Maintenance allowance Rs.18,000/- per month including Tuition fee (Stipend)
- Contingent expenses for Rs.15,000/-per annum study tours within India, purchase of books, stationery, etc.
LAST DATE
- An advertisement will be released towards the end of June every year and completed application forms together with all the necessary enclosures should reach the Administrative Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi-110 011 on or before 31 August.
- Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund’s decision to call a candidate for interview or select a candidate for scholarship will be final and no representation in this regard will be entertained.
- Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview any time during January/February.
- The Scholarship will commence from 1st April every year.
ENCLOSURES
The following documents should be securely attached seriatim to the Application Form:
- A passport size photograph of the applicant to be pasted on the first page of the form.
- A synopsis of the proposed project as per the attached format.
- Doctoral Monitoring Committee’s report or Supervisor’s report/recommendations.
- Postal Order/Demand Draft for Rs.100/-. Candidates belonging to SC/ST are exempted from paying this application fee.
- Ph.D. registration certificate.
- Necessary certificates as proof of category issued by the Competent Authorities should be attached. (EWS certificate should be for the current year).
- Please send us self-attested photocopies of certificates and marksheets in support of your age and educational qualifications.
UNDERTAKING:
- The selected candidates as long as they remain recipients of the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship cannot receive any other grant/fellowship/scholarship from any other source.
- The selected candidates have to give an undertaking that they are not receiving benefits under any other fellowship/scholarship programmes before the commencement of the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship.
- Also, the selected candidates have to submit an undertaking from their Universities where she/he is pursuing her/his Ph.D. that the student is not receiving benefits under any other fellowship/scholarship programmes.
- Besides, the candidate who is awarded a scholarship will give an undertaking to the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund to abide by the terms and conditions of the award of scholarship and to refund the amount already spent on her/him in case the Fund is satisfied that the candidate has committed a breach of any term or conditions thereof.
- Kindly note that only after the submission of all the above-mentioned undertakings the first disbursement of scholarship amount will be made.
How to Apply
Incomplete and unsigned application forms are liable to be rejected.
The Application Form for Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships can be downloaded from the website www.jnmf.in. The amount of Rs.100/- is to be paid by Postal Order/Demand Draft drawn in favour of “Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund” payable at New Delhi and should be sent along with the completed application form.
