The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is launching a prestigious ‘Young Professionals Program’ for the North-East Region of India (NER YPP). The NER YPP is a highly competitive fellowship program that aims to attract highly qualified and motivated individuals under the age of 30. The first NER YPP will span from February to August 2024.

The NER of India has been increasingly acknowledged as a potential economic growth centre for South Asia and Southeast Asia. The Government of India, through its Act East Policy, is directing special attention to the region, with the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (MDONER) mandated to guide and drive accelerated yet sustainable development. Despite this significant strategic importance and immense socio-economic potential, progress in the NER has been slow. To fully unlock its potential, address development impediments, and capitalize on the opportunities and support it is receiving, the NER needs to enhance the institutional capacities of key government functionaries in terms of skilled and experienced human resources. National missions are underway to support capacity building in areas ranging from planning and governance to infrastructure development and finance. The impact of such initiatives can be substantially enhanced by engaging the required talent and expertise. One of the strategies is to provide an opportunity for youth to work here through the NER YPP.

The primary objective of the NER YPP is to address the need of skilled professionals in the region and nurture a talent pool that can be retained in the NER for its comprehensive, resilient, and sustainable development. Thus, every YP will work closely with departments of state governments and local bodies of the NER and provide them knowledge support on a day to day basis. The YPs will be provided orientation training to enable them to assist cities/ states in a range of activities including urban policy, project preparation, adoption of digital technologies etc.

How to Apply

Applicants may apply only if they have completed their ongoing education before the commencement of the YPP.
