While significant recent progress has been achieved in the field of observational physical oceanography, laboratory studies, and numerical ocean & atmospheric modelling, it is now recognized that a synergistic, multidisciplinary approach is essential for deeper understanding and improved prediction of climate impacts. In this centre, we propose to combine: (i) Novel fine-scale field measurements, (ii) Fine-scale experimental studies of upper ocean physical processes in the lab, in conjunction with numerical/theoretical modelling, and (iii) large-scale coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling, to improve our understanding of air-sea-land interactions in the north Indian Ocean region, especially the under-observed and poorly-understood coastal regions.
