Fifth Edition of ICAN5: Inclusivity, Convergence and Alternative Negotiations

INCLUSIVITY

Inclusivity encompasses a system in which equal access to opportunities and resources is ensured for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised. People with physical or mental disabilities or those belonging to linguistic, cultural, religious and racial minorities form the marginalised sections. Children with no access to education and women with no dignity in society also fall in the category of marginalised people.

To make the society inclusive, we need to generate and promote thoughtful and respectful content. Both the conventional and alternative media entities should provide increasing space to diverse voices and work for reducing cultural and other biases in their functioning and content generation.

Inclusion is mentioned often together with the terms ‘diversity’, ‘equity’, ‘representation’ and more recently also ‘belonging’. It is the responsibility of both the professional journalists and the citizen journalists to give voice to those voices which are traditionally left out of the media spectrum.

CONVERGENCE

Knowledge, technology, and society as well as natural systems are increasingly coherent and complex, and new systems are continuously formed at their interfaces. Convergence is a problem-solving strategy to holistically understand, create, and transform a system for reaching a common goal, such as advancing an emerging technology in society. The systems may be either in natural, scientific, technological, economic, or societal settings.

Media is passing through a critical phase of convergence which has got accelerated with the advent of internet and is now being pushed by artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The process of media convergence started with Smartphone while internet served as a platform of democratizing information, thereby breaking the barriers and empowering the people. This process has become faster with immersive media technologies which have encouraged diversity in content and presentation with wider choices to end receivers.

ALTERNATIVE NEGOTIATIONS

Negotiations carry the meaning of discussion, discourse, brainstorming or exchange of ideas. So, alternative negotiations will mean discussions on alternative thoughts and opinions. This can be broadly interpreted as availability of space to multiple and even contradictory thoughts and expressions. This also ensures space to resistance and dissenting viewpoints which is so essential for a vibrant democracy and inclusive society.

At the same time, the term alternative negotiations is referred to alternative media forums in this technology age – alternative media encompassing digital media and varied social media platforms. The spread of these media tools has helped in creating an inclusive, equitable and representative society.
