CALL FOR PAPERS

Latin America witnessed the emergence of ‘Boom’ Literature during the mid-20th century. It heralded a renaissance in literary expression and cultural consciousness. The literary luminaries of the movement, especially the Nobel Laureates of Boom Fiction, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa, not only captivated global audiences but also ignited a transformative dialogue within and beyond Latin American borders. South India, especially Kerala, with its medley of culture, traditions and artistic expression, has experienced the impact of Latin American culture. The distinct yet resonant cultural landscapes of South (Latin) America and Kerala summon an examination of the intersections, dialogues, and synergies that emerge when Latin American Nobel ‘Boom’ writing encounters the vibrant mosaic of South Indian cultural expressions.

Through a multidisciplinary lens, the seminar seeks to engage through the theoretical discourses of Magic realism, Neocolonialism, Eco-imperialism, Interculturalism, Postcolonialism, and Transculturation to understand the profound exchanges and discourses occurring between Latin American Nobel ‘Boom’ literature and South Indian cultural expressions. The scholarly contributions or papers can delve into various facets of this cultural dialogue, including geography, history, films, economy, climate, food, plantations, people, future exchanges, power dynamics and resistance within the literary discourse.

Invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to explore the various aspects of this cultural dialogue, including but not limited to:

  • Translation of Latin American literature into Malayalam
  • Culinary exchanges and food heritage
  • Identity formation and intercultural dialogues
  • Transnational narratives and the impact of globalisation
